Foam Insulation Acts As A Sound Barrier

Spray Foam is an excellent sound barrier! As you may know, there are several different densities of spray foam.
Let’s start with half pound open cell foam.
By half pound open cell, we mean that if you had a 1 foot cube of foam, it would weigh half a pound. This is termed a low density foam. The term open cell means that the cells are open, and that the substance between the cells is air. It is an excellent sound barrier due to the open cells. It is best for medium to high frequency sounds.
The other major density of foam used in the insulation and sound barrier market is 2 pound closed cell.
Once again, a one foot cube would weigh in around 2 pounds. The blowing agent in closed cell is a gas that is trapped in the cells of the foam, thus the closed cell. It is not permeable, so it is a wonderful sound barrier for low to medium density sound waves.
Keep in mind as you plan a wall or space for sound barriers that the best system is one where you can have several different thicknesses and materials to trap or slow down the sound waves. This can be achieved by a thicker wall that has one side sprayed with foam, a gap in the middle, and batts on the other side.
